Pakistan cricket is at the crossroads, as coach Bob Woolmer’s death is treated “suspicious”, with police having sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the death.
Bob Woolmer, Pakistan cricket coach and the former England Test player, died in a Jamaican hospital on Sunday post being found unconscious on the floor of his hotel room a day after Pakistan’s humiliating exit from the World Cup.
Woolmer’s unexpected death and lack of credible information comes as a shock to the entire cricket fraternity; still no conclusive finding of what may have caused it, further kindles suspicion.
Woolmer’s body in the absence of his family members was taken to the hospital for post-mortem, Tuesday morning, almost 48 hours after his passing away - the autopsy performed had inconclusive findings and the pathologist asked for toxicology and other forensic tests to be carried out in pursuit to reach the root cause of the mysterious death.
Sarfaraz Nawaz: Woolmer was murdered
Woolmer was a known diabetic and there were reports he had complained of breathing difficulties of late that could have led to a cardiac arrest. There is added notion that he may have died of stress coupled with alcohol and prescripted drug overdose, or an ulcer rapture as blood spots were seen in Woolmer’s hotel room.
However, the biggest revelation comes with former Pakistan pacer Sarfaraz Nawaz’s outbreak where he says - Woolmer was murdered by the betting syndicates, which even the investigating police feels is most likely, after reports from the Jamaican media which said - Woolmer’s body was pale when found cataleptic in the hotel room and the autopsy reports also ruling out the aforementioned causes.
What’s happening with Pakistan cricket?
• Skipper Inzamam Ul Haq one of the greatest batsmen in the world, with over 11,000 runs to his credential retires from the shorter version of the game.
• Sarfaraz Nawaz alleges Pakistani players of fixing matches.
• Pakistan Cricket Board’s head Naseem Ashraf and the three-member selection committee resigns over the losses to the West Indies and Ireland and the team’s humiliating exit from the World Cup.
Woolmer to reveal all in his upcoming book:
The controversy over the death being “suspicious” triggers with the fact that - perhaps all at the helm of cricket are somehow preoccupied with the betting in the sport and Woolmer was about to reveal all that in a book post the World Cup.
Where’s the situation heading:
Jamaica police is asserting the whereabouts of the Pakistan players at the time of Woolmer’s death and has advised the Pak team not to leave the country until further orders.
Pakistan team has urged not to play the match against Zimbabwe but PCB insists that the team would play the match. Mushtaq Ahmed will officiate as the coach while Inzi will lead.
The charges of the suspicion of murder have not been confirmed by any authority yet, however ICC will hold a press conference on the issue later in the day.
UPDATE: 22 March
Quoting police sources, an anonymous reporter of a Jamaican Radio station claims that deceased Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer could have been strangulated.
I made contact with the ongoing investigation. Police will tell the public and journalists that the cause of death was strangulation. I have sources in Jamaican police and I stick by my sources. Maybe they wanted to make some extra precautions (before announcing).
Former Pakistani player Sarfaraz Nawaz is making serious allegation against the Pakistani Team, PCB, match-fixers and even against ICC too. He has said that ICC has offered millions of dollars to Jamaican government to hide the original facts.
If he is right, it will be really a big jolt to the game of cricket.
Woolmer’s death has brought great shock for all cricketing nations. It’s tragic that only death has brought forward his credentials.
But at the same time we cannot even forget that if Mr.Woolmer is murdered what was the root cause behind it?
The root cause is still yet unknown but something was there that the coach planned to disclosed but due to fear of deceitful spotlight or to earn some handsome amount someone didn’t allowed him to unveil the story.
Secondly, (matter-of-fact) he wz the coach of the Pak team but he wz not emotionally involved with Pak cricketers n if one says dat he wz carried away then I think it makes no sense to mi, at least …..!
n thirdly, Pak cricketers’ involvement in match-fixing issue that I think Woolmer had become familiar with……
Now the recent killing of Bob woolmer has sparked another debate that how ignominiously these bookies are tiding over this game.
It is also a great jolt to the cricket. The respective investigative agencies of cricket playing nations must take some initiative to stop this malfunctioning, otherwise more innocent people like Bob Woolmer would go on becoming the prey of this avarice.
Doubt persists about what one is witnessing unfold on the cricket field, whether it is real or make believe.
Big money is at stake. They term it Match Fixing.
Bob Woolmer did become a victim of the game he was passionate about.
Today his death is suspect.
Who got him, pressure of the game, dejection or the Match Fixer?
It’s no more a gentleman’s game.
Bob Woolmer was a gentleman.
Pakistan might fix matches, but there is little room to reason betting on a team like Ireland. Match-fixing is not new to the game of cricket, but considering the stature of Pakistan in the international cricketing arena, match-fixing in the game against Ireland seems a bit ridiculous.
The shock and shame on the players of Pakistan was visible after the defeat against Ireland and this very shock and shame had its repercursions. The murder theory of Bob Woolmer is an obvious build-up, but it does not appear logical during the World Cup and a murder of a person who had already sacrificed so much for cricket.
And, Yes there is ”suspicion” about his death. I hope it is not so, because that will lead to a big shock to cricket fans as well as the game of cricket.
Peace to Bob Woolmer’s Soul.
